Oh, the more I re-read that exchange, the more I simply haven't any idea what to think. Can you imagine? I actually entertained the notion for a few scant seconds that he was employing so much secrecy and caution to see me! Goodness knows, if Josiah were to catch him undertaking such a thing, he'd be caught in a sore spot indeed. But how brave that would have been! And so flattering, all for me!
But ... Lady Jennise? Lady Jennise is married! If there is anything ... untoward going on, why, that would be such a scandal! Her reputation would never recover, and while it would no doubt be deserved, I do prefer to think better of her ... and of Sir Jack, as well, for all Josiah says the man is a scoundrel. He's so protective of us, surely it's his own bias coloring the situation ...
Of course, none of this matters at all. I can't believe I made such a silly demand, I'm awful at those sorts of roughshod common wagering games. It's sure to be perfectly humiliating -- but I've not heard word since, so perhaps he hasn't been able to breach the castle through the kitchen quarters, after all? Oh, I don't dare ask. I'm not entirely certain I wish to know ...
